The sorry state of English basketball fundamentals: it's a matter of FOCUS!
by Nick O'Leary

In March 2007 Roy Packham, the outstanding ex junior coach from the 1970s and 1980s wrote an articulate letter for the Basketball Coaches Association (BCA) website discussing the current state of basketball in England. Coach Packham highlighted, amongst a number of issues, the poor standard of junior basketball and possible reasons for the sad decline in individual fundamentals including young players’ changing attitudes to the game, poor role models in the British Basketball League and past weaknesses of the governing body amongst others. However, it was not all doom and gloom.

British Basketball Forum

The Forum was held on Friday 25th January 2008 at the Hilton Hotel, Birmingham Airport. The invited delegates were a mixture of the great and good of British Basketball and I must confess I have no idea how the ‘guest list’ was assembled. Needless to say there were, in my opinion, some very notable omissions. I was invited to attend to represent the views of the Basketball Coaches Association and this is a brief report on the day.

Learning and learning approaches in coaching
by Nick O'Leary

There appears to be a gradual shift in emphasis in teaching, coaching and dare one say it, in basketball coaching in the UK. While what we coach is crucial there is now a growing emphasis on what players actually learn and how they learn.

Coaches must accept that “learning starts with learners” (Chen and Rovegno, 2000, p.366) given that understanding how players learn will influence the way coaches transform knowledge into teachable content (Chen and Rovegno, 2000; Griffin et al, 2005).

Moreover, without an understanding of how players learn and how they react to the content being taught coaches will struggle to relate the material to their current level of understanding and their previous experiences (Chen and Rovegno, 2000).

Any instructional strategy should be based on learning theory because without an understanding of how players learn, one cannot expect to achieve intended learning goals (Griffin et al, 2005).

An example of HOW to coach decision-making!
by Nick O'Leary

There is a need for an appropriately structured game-like situations to enable the players to make decisions relating to where and when to perform skills and strategies. However, how we coach will determine how effective our players’ decision-making will be.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an example of such a structured session using a cognitive learning approach whereby the players work out solutions to tactical problems themselves with the coach facilitating their learning.

Basketball is a decision-making game; let's coach good decision-making!
By Nick O'Leary

It is generally agreed that different types of knowledge are required to play an invasion game like basketball successfully; Declarative knowledge, Procedural knowledge and Conditional knowledge.

While all three types of knowledge are necessary to become an effective player and should be taught by the coach where might the emphasis lie?

The answer is largely dependent on the nature of the game of basketball.

The seven deadly ‘sins’ of the beginner and/or inexperienced coach (and more importantly, some solutions)

As somebody who spends a great deal of his time observing beginner coaches and tutoring England Basketball Level 1 courses amongst others it has occurred to me that I constantly see the same coaching / teaching errors.

Indeed, I spend much of my time rectifying such errors during Level 1 courses and beginner University coaching and teaching modules. In presenting such a list the aim is not to be negative but to point out more appropriate methods of presenting effective coaching to beginners learning to coach the game.

Leadership and Emotion

Leaders demonstrate confidence in the abilities of others. They understand the differences that exist and are willing to try new things and hear new ideas. Effective leaders encourage and foster participation by all who can contribute. They seek out people who bring skills to the group that complement rather than duplicate their own strengths.
